Schoppel AlbMerino – When Nature Is the Source

Some yarns start with a colour idea.
Others start with a fibre choice.

AlbMerino starts somewhere deeper — with land, animals, and a commitment to working with nature rather than around it.

This is Schoppel at their most grounded.

Nature as the starting point

AlbMerino is built on a simple principle: if you respect the fibre from the very beginning, everything that follows becomes easier, better and more honest.

For this project, Schoppel works directly with sheep farmers Stotz in Münsingen, processing the wool from around 4,000 sheep raised in the Swabian Jura. This isn’t anonymous wool shipped halfway across the world — it’s regional, traceable and deeply connected to place.

By focusing on natural fibres and local partnerships, Schoppel ensures AlbMerino remains genuinely eco-friendly, not just in name but in practice.

What makes AlbMerino different

The real magic happens in how the yarn is made.

AlbMerino uses Schoppel’s patented Reggae felting yarn technology — a process that gently compacts the fibres using moisture, warmth and movement rather than aggressive twisting or pressure. The wool is allowed to retain its natural vitality while being shaped into a stable, usable yarn.

This means the fibre isn’t forced into submission.
It’s encouraged.

How does that feel on the needles?

AlbMerino creates a yarn that is:

  • Voluminous without being heavy

  • Strong yet comfortable

  • Calm and well-behaved to knit

  • Naturally elastic

  • Full of quiet character

Because the fibres aren’t tightly twisted or compressed, the yarn keeps its life. Stitches sit neatly, fabric holds its shape, and the finished piece feels warm, breathable and reassuringly solid.

It’s the kind of yarn that feels right in your hands.

What should you knit with AlbMerino?

AlbMerino shines in garments that value structure and longevity:

  • Jumpers and cardigans

  • Outer layers

  • Everyday knits meant to last

  • Simple designs where fabric quality matters

It doesn’t need complicated patterns to impress. The yarn itself does the work.

The McIntosh View

AlbMerino is a reminder that sustainability doesn’t have to shout. Sometimes it simply shows up as good decisions made consistently — local wool, gentle processing, and respect for the fibre at every stage.

This is yarn with a sense of place.
With memory.
With integrity.

If you enjoy knitting pieces that feel rooted, purposeful and enduring, AlbMerino is one to savour slowly — stitch by stitch.
