Sheep Friendly – No Mulesing
When we choose a yarn, we’re choosing far more than colour and softness. We’re choosing how that fibre came into the world — and what it represents. For LANGYARNS, animal welfare is not optional. It’s a clear, long-standing commitment.
LANGYARNS’ Promise Since 2017
Since 2017, LANGYARNS has made a firm decision: all Merino wool qualities are produced using non-mulesed wool. This ensures that the Merino fibres used come from sheep that are not subjected to unnecessary distress or injury through mulesing.
LANGYARNS source their Merino either from certified Australian production sites that meet strict welfare standards, or from regions where mulesing is prohibited or unnecessary, such as South Africa and South America. The result is Merino wool that delivers exceptional quality — without compromising on compassion.
What Is Mulesing?
Mulesing is a controversial practice intended to reduce the risk of flystrike, a serious condition caused when blowflies lay eggs in the skin folds around a sheep’s anus and genitals. When the larvae hatch, they burrow into the sheep’s tissue, causing severe pain, infection, and in some cases, death.
Merino sheep, prized for their dense, fine fleece, are particularly vulnerable due to the skin folds that develop as they grow. To prevent flystrike, young sheep may undergo a surgical procedure in which sections of skin around these areas are removed. The resulting scar tissue makes it harder for flies to lay eggs.
While mulesing can reduce infestation risk, it is often carried out without sufficient pain relief, and wounds may not always be adequately treated. This is why the practice raises serious welfare concerns.
In countries such as South Africa, New Zealand, and Uruguay, mulesing is not practiced — either because it is banned or because climatic conditions do not favour fly infestations. However, in Australia, the world’s largest producer of Merino wool, mulesing remains legal.
Why Non-Mulesed Wool Matters
Non-mulesed Merino wool carries a higher global market price, which also means higher production costs. LANGYARNS consciously accept this because they believe ethical responsibility should never be optional.
By choosing non-mulesed wool, you are actively supporting animal-friendly sheep farming and encouraging better practices worldwide. It’s a choice that reflects care — for the sheep, the environment, and the future of wool production.
Knitting With Care
When you knit with LANGYARNS Merino, you can enjoy the process with a lighter heart. You’re working with beautiful, sustainable materials that don’t come at the expense of animal welfare.
Every stitch becomes a small but meaningful act — one that supports kinder farming, responsible sourcing, and a more thoughtful way of making. And that, to me, makes the yarn feel even better in your hands.
