What Is Knititation?
Mindful Knitting for Busy, Fidgeting Minds
Hello lovely people, I’m James McIntosh, founder of McIntosh® and co-creator (with Dr Thomas Ernst FRCP) of Knititation — mindfulness for those of us who can’t sit still. Forget incense and crossed legs… I found my calm through a beige alpaca jumper, two chopsticks, and a very overworked brain. Traditional meditation? Not for me. Knitting? That stuck. A stitch became my breath.
In a nutshell
Knititation is simply knitting with intention and attention — letting each stitch anchor you in the moment.
Why it works if you’re a fidgeter
- Busy hands, calmer mind: the rhythm of stitches helps stop thoughts from spiralling.
- Little wins: one stitch, then another. Before you know it, you’ve got a row done (and your mood has shifted).
- Portable calm: trains, sofas, waiting rooms… I’ve even knitted in nightclubs and on the N36 night bus!
- Colour therapy: moving from beige to cornflower or mustard can literally lift your day.
How to start
- Pick a yarn you love (bonus points if it makes you smile).
- Cast on — keep it simple, garter stitch is perfect (that's just the knit stitch).
- As you make a stitch, breathe in. As you finish it, breathe out.
- Notice how your shoulders drop, your body softens.
- At the end of the row, pause. Smile. That’s Knititation.
Quick tips for daily life
- Five-minute garter-stitch swatch: great for anxious moments.
- Chocolate & knitting: enjoy one at a time — trust me, I’ve tried both together and ended up “frogging” rows!
- Keep it simple: RS, WS… it doesn’t matter if it’s perfect. It’s about the calm.
