Mindful Knitting on the Go: Calm in Motion

Mindful Knitting ® on the Go: Calm in Motion

You don’t have to sit still to find stillness.

I’ve always loved travelling with my knitting.
Whether it’s a train to Munich, a bus through the countryside, or just a quick hop across South-East London, I find that the rhythm of the needles makes every journey softer somehow.

It’s the constant in the chaos — the quiet thread that keeps me calm when the world moves fast.

That’s what Knititation® is all about: finding peace wherever you are, one stitch at a time.

Calm Doesn’t Always Mean Still

We often think of mindfulness as sitting cross-legged in silence, but real life doesn’t always allow that.
For me, stillness is something I carry.

When I knit on a train, the motion of the carriage becomes part of the rhythm.
When I knit on a park bench, the sound of birds becomes my soundtrack.
Even in busy spaces, my needles become my anchor — a small act of stillness inside the noise.

Dr Thomas calls it “mindfulness in motion” — a gentle way to bring the nervous system back to calm while the body keeps moving.

“Your brain doesn’t care whether you’re sitting or travelling,” he says. “What matters is the rhythm — movement that feels safe, predictable, and soothing together with the rhythm of your breath.”

That’s why knitters feel relaxed even in crowded places. The rhythm tells the brain: you’re okay here.

Packing Calm: The Knititation Travel Kit

You don’t need much to take your mindfulness with you — just a few well-loved tools.

My go-to Knititation travel essentials:

  • A simple project — socks, scarves, or swatches. Nothing too complicated.

  • Soft, tactile yarn — merino or cotton-linen blends that feel lovely in your hands.

  • Circular needles — they’re compact, flexible, and perfect for small spaces.

  • A small pouch or case — so your calm doesn’t unravel in your bag.

  • Headphones (optional) — not for music, but to create a bubble of peace if you need it.

Sometimes I’ll add a notebook for thoughts that arise mid-knit — mindfulness tends to unlock beautiful ideas when you least expect it.

Turning Waiting into Well-Being

One of the simplest ways to practise Knititation is to reframe waiting as weaving calm.

At the doctor’s.
In an airport queue.
Between meetings.

Instead of filling the time with scrolling or worry, pick up your needles.
Breathe in for the stitch, breathe out for the slip.
What was once wasted time becomes mindful time — and you’ll arrive wherever you’re going already calm.

A Moving Meditation

Here’s a small Knititation you can try anywhere:

  1. Sit comfortably — or stand, if you’re in a queue.

  2. Take one slow breath in.

  3. Begin to knit or simply hold your yarn, feeling its texture.

  4. Let your breath fall into the rhythm of your stitches.

  5. If your surroundings feel noisy, imagine each sound passing through like scenery from a train window.

The world moves — and you remain the still point in the middle of it.

Wherever You Go, You Can Knititate

When I travel now, my knitting is more than a hobby — it’s my home in motion.
A pocket of peace I can unfold anywhere.

That’s the beauty of mindful making: calm isn’t a place, it’s a practice.
You don’t have to find it — you bring it with you.

So this year, pack your needles, choose yarn that feels like sunshine, and knit your way to stillness — wherever life takes you.

Because no matter where you’re going, calm is just a stitch away.
