ChiaoGoo – The Story Behind The Red Cables

by
James McIntosh

There are some brands that become famous because of clever marketing.

Then there are brands that become famous because knitters simply tell other knitters about them.

ChiaoGoo belongs firmly in the second category.

Long before ChiaoGoo became one of the most sought-after names in knitting, it began in a small village outside Lin'an, near Hangzhou in eastern China, with a mother knitting sweaters for her family and a father making bamboo knitting needles by hand.

As many of you know, I am fascinated by the stories behind the things we use. Whether it is a ball of wool, a knitting needle or a handmade notion, I always want to know who made it, why they made it and what inspired them.

The story of ChiaoGoo is one of those stories.

A Sweater That Changed Everything

When ChiaoGoo founder Leon Zheng was a young boy, his mother knitted him a sweater.

It was not a fancy sweater.

In fact, Leon remembers feeling slightly embarrassed by it. Unlike the sweaters worn by his brothers, his was knitted from leftover yarns gathered from different projects. The colours and textures varied throughout the garment because his mother used whatever she had available.

At the time, he simply saw a patchwork sweater.

Years later, he would realise that sweater represented something much greater.

It symbolised creativity, resourcefulness and craftsmanship. It also taught him that beautiful things can be created when different ideas are brought together.

That philosophy would later shape ChiaoGoo itself.

The Meaning Of ChiaoGoo

One of my favourite details about the company is its name.

"ChiaoGoo" translates as "highly skilful and crafty lady."

It was chosen as a tribute to Leon's mother.

She knitted not for pleasure or fashion, but because knitting helped keep her family warm. After the day's work was done, she would sit and knit whenever yarn was available.

Like so many knitters, she created something practical, beautiful and lasting with her own hands.

The entire company exists because of that inspiration.

Bamboo, Family And Tradition

Leon's father was a bamboo craftsman.

Beside the family home stood his workshop, where he made traditional bamboo double-pointed knitting needles from locally grown mōsō bamboo.

These simple tools helped provide clothing for families throughout the region.

Those same bamboo needles became the starting point for ChiaoGoo.

Years later, after studying mechanical engineering and moving to the United States, Leon began discussing business ideas with his brothers, who remained in China.

Together they realised they possessed something special.

They had access to exceptional bamboo.

They understood how knitting needles were traditionally made.

And they had the engineering knowledge to improve them.

From Tradition To Engineering

Leon and his wife Wendy are both engineers.

Leon completed a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and worked designing engines for General Motors. Wendy studied Civil Engineering and completed a master's degree before helping build the business.

Their engineering backgrounds would prove invaluable.

In 2005 they developed their first product: a bamboo double-pointed knitting needle inspired by the very needles Leon's father had made decades earlier.

Before launch, the needles underwent the most important quality-control process imaginable.

They were tested by Leon's mother.

Only once she approved them were they ready for sale.

The needles sold immediately.

Knitters loved their warmth, strength and lightness.

The foundation of ChiaoGoo had been laid.

Why Knitters Love ChiaoGoo

As the company grew, Leon continued refining and improving every detail.

His philosophy was simple.

ChiaoGoo should not focus on decoration.

It should focus on creating the very best tools possible.

Today, when knitters talk about ChiaoGoo, they often mention the same things:

  • Precision needle tips
  • Smooth joins
  • Exceptional durability
  • Flexible memory-free cables
  • Consistent engineering and quality

Perhaps nothing demonstrates this better than ChiaoGoo's famous red cables.

The cables took years to perfect.

Strong yet flexible, they resist twisting and kinking while remaining comfortable to use.

The colour red was chosen deliberately too. In Chinese culture, red symbolises happiness, joy and good fortune.

What began as an engineering solution became one of the most recognisable features in the knitting world.

A Tool Company For Knitting

When asked about his philosophy, Leon often describes ChiaoGoo as:

"A tool company for knitting."

I rather like that.

It explains why so many knitters become devoted ChiaoGoo users.

The company isn't trying to make novelty products.

It isn't chasing trends.

Instead, it focuses on creating tools that help knitters enjoy the craft for longer, knit more comfortably and achieve better results.

Everything else comes second.

The ChiaoGoo Of Today

Today ChiaoGoo produces hundreds of knitting and crochet products used by makers throughout the world.

Its interchangeable systems have become especially popular because they allow knitters to create multiple needle lengths and combinations from a single set.

Yet despite that growth, the company remains remarkably connected to its origins.

A mother knitting for her family.

A father crafting bamboo tools.

A belief that quality matters.

And a desire to make the best knitting tools possible.

Why ChiaoGoo Matters To McIntosh

When I decide whether to bring a new brand into McIntosh, I look beyond the products.

I want to know the people behind them.

I want to know whether their values align with ours.

The story behind ChiaoGoo is one of craftsmanship, family, innovation and care.

That feels very familiar to me.

Perhaps that is why so many of you have been asking for ChiaoGoo for so long.

And perhaps that is why I am so delighted that McIntosh is now an Authorised ChiaoGoo Retailer.

After all, knitting has always been about more than wool and needles.

It is about people.

And ChiaoGoo has one of the loveliest stories of all.

LIVE life in COLOUR.
