Seeknit Shirotake

Pure bamboo, quietly confident

If Koshitsu is bamboo refined through time and treatment, Shirotake is bamboo in its most natural, honest form. Calm, light, and beautifully understated, Seeknit Shirotake needles celebrate the material exactly as it is.

Shirotake is made from carefully selected moso bamboo, crafted by Kinki Amibari in Nara, Japan, where knitting needles have been produced since 1916. Unlike Koshitsu, Shirotake bamboo is untreated, allowing the natural character of the bamboo to remain visible and tactile.

What does Shirotake mean?

Shirotake translates to “white bamboo”, referring to the pale, natural colour of the needles. This light tone is not a finish or coating — it is simply the bamboo itself, carefully prepared, shaped, and polished without hardening treatments or waxes.

The result is a needle that feels soft, warm, and quietly responsive in the hand.

A gentler knitting experience

Shirotake needles offer slightly more surface grip than treated bamboo or metal, making them especially reassuring for knitters who like control and steadiness. Stitches stay where you place them, without feeling sticky or slow.

This makes Shirotake a lovely choice for:

  • Slippery fibres such as silk, alpaca, or plant blends

  • Lace and fine-gauge knitting

  • Beginners building confidence

  • Calm, mindful knitting sessions

The lightweight nature of untreated bamboo also reduces hand fatigue, particularly during longer projects.

Crafted with restraint

As with all Seeknit needles, the craftsmanship is precise and deliberate. Tips are clean and accurate without being aggressive, joins are smooth, and every detail is designed to disappear once you begin knitting.

Shirotake embodies a Japanese design principle of restraint — doing only what is necessary, and doing it well.

Choosing Shirotake

If you value simplicity, natural materials, and tools that feel kind in the hand, Shirotake is a beautiful companion. It doesn’t rush you. It doesn’t demand attention. It simply supports the stitch and the moment you’re in.
