Knitting Beautifully with McIntosh Hand-Dyed Yarns

McIntosh hand-dyed yarns are dyed in semi-solid colourways, which means each skein has beautiful darker and lighter areas within the same shade. This gives your knitting depth, movement and character without becoming too busy.

Because McIntosh yarns are hand-dyed together per order, the same hue and tone runs across all the skeins in your order. They are made to belong together, while still keeping the natural individuality that makes hand-dyed yarn so special.

Before You Start: Unwind Your Skein

McIntosh hand-dyed yarn comes in a skein, so it needs to be wound into a ball or cake before knitting.

Open the skein out into a large loop and place it over a yarn swift, the back of a chair, or around someone’s hands. Carefully find the ties holding the skein together and remove them, making sure you have located the yarn ends before you begin.

Wind slowly and gently. Try not to pull the yarn too tightly, as this can stretch the fibre before you start knitting.

Why Alternate Skeins?

Even though McIntosh skeins in the same order are dyed together for consistency of hue and tone, each skein is still individually hand-dyed. That means the semi-solid colour may have slightly different darker and lighter areas from skein to skein.

For larger projects, such as jumpers, cardigans, shawls or wide panels of stocking stitch, alternating skeins can help blend these natural variations beautifully.

To do this, knit one row from one skein, then the next row from another skein, carrying the unused yarn neatly up the side. This creates a gentle, even flow of colour across your project.

Let the Semi-Solid Colour Shine

Semi-solid yarns are wonderfully versatile. The darker and lighter areas add interest to simple stitches, while still allowing texture, lace and cables to show clearly.

Stocking stitch, garter stitch, rib, moss stitch, lace and cables can all work beautifully with McIntosh hand-dyed yarns. The colour gives life to the fabric, while the stitch pattern remains visible.

Swatch First

A small swatch is always worth making. It helps you check your tension, but it also lets you see how the semi-solid colour behaves in your chosen stitch pattern.

You may notice gentle shading, soft movement or little pools of deeper colour. That is part of the charm of hand-dyed yarn.

Washing Your Finished Knit

When your project is complete, wash it gently in cool water with a wool-friendly wash. Do not rub or wring it. Press out excess water in a towel, then lay your knit flat to dry.

This helps protect the fibres, the shape and the hand-dyed colour.

Enjoy the McIntosh Difference

Every skein of McIntosh hand-dyed yarn is made with care, colour and character. The semi-solid shades bring subtle life to your stitches, and because your skeins are dyed together per order, they are designed to work harmoniously across your whole project.

Take your time, enjoy the rhythm, and let the colour become part of the pleasure of making.
