Honeymoon Knitting, Day 1: From Peckham to Brussels

Leaving Peckham (the posh part)

At precisely 8am, two overstuffed suitcases and an unreasonable amount of yarn left Peckham Rye station bound for Kings Cross. Dr Thomas carried the passports. James carried the project bag—arguably more valuable. This was not just any honeymoon; this was a honeymoon knitting adventure across Germany, with Oktoberfest, the Addi knitting needle factory, and the birth of the McIntosh #1 jumper all stitched into the itinerary.

Eurostar: Knitting at High Speed

On the Eurostar to Brussels, James settled into his seat and pulled out a sock-in-progress: LANGYARNS Footprints, a self-patterning yarn perfect for train knitting. In the second project bag? LANG SuperSoxx, because one does not simply honeymoon with only one pair of socks on the needles.

Every stitch was a countdown to Monday’s Addi factory visit, where PROMISE yarn from WOOLADDICTS would finally be cast on for the McIntosh #1 jumper. Until then, socks were the warm-up act being knit on the new ADDI CraSy Snakes.

Brussels by Night: Waffles, Beer & WIPs

By evening, the newlyweds were in Brussels. The city offered three essentials: Belgian waffles, Trappist beer, and a perfect place to check sock progress under streetlamps. Tourists may take photos of Grand Place; James took photos of stitch markers.

Dr Thomas rolled his eyes lovingly, already imagining the blog readers following along: “Day 1—still socks.” But this is the beauty of knitting travel: you measure journeys in rows, not miles.

Tomorrow: Cologne, Wuppertal & the Schwebebahn

Next stop: Cologne, then on to Wuppertal for the legendary Schwebebahn railway—and dinner in a beer keller with Addi’s Anne-Marie and Marc. But tonight, it’s Brussels, bubbles in the glass, stitches on the needles, and the quiet joy of knowing that tomorrow the real adventure—and the first rows of destiny—begin.
