A Simple Guide to Seeknit Interchangeable Sizes
A Simple Guide to Seeknit Interchangeable Sizes
Tips, cords, connectors, and how it all fits together
Seeknit’s interchangeable system is beautifully logical once you see how the parts relate to one another. This guide is here to make choosing the right cord, connector, and stopper feel straightforward — whether you’re setting up your first Seeknit set or adding to an existing one.
All Seeknit interchangeable components are made by Kinki Amibari in Nara, Japan, and are designed to work together precisely and securely.
Step 1: Choose the correct size system (M1.8, M2, or M4)
Seeknit uses three interchangeable size groups. The key rule is simple:
the cord size must match the needle tip size range.
Seeknit size groups
-
M1.8
For 2.00mm–3.25mm needle tips
Used for fine knitting, lace, socks, and lightweight garments -
M2
For 3.50mm–5.00mm needle tips
The most commonly used size for garments, hats, and shawls -
M4
For 5.50mm–10.00mm needle tips
Designed for thicker yarns, outerwear, and larger projects
If your needle tips are M2, everything they connect to must also be M2 — cords, joints, converters, and stoppers.
Step 2: Understanding cords (and finished needle length)
Seeknit cords are measured without needle tips attached.
Once you add tips, the total needle length increases depending on tip length.
Seeknit offers 5cm short tips and 12.5cm standard tips, which gives you flexibility for small or large circumference knitting.
Finished needle lengths
| Cord length | 2 × 5cm tips | 2 × 12.5cm tips | × 5cm + 1 × 12.5cm tips |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13cm | 26cm | 38cm | 30.5cm |
| 25cm | 35cm | 50cm | 42.5cm |
| 30cm | 40cm | 55cm | 47.5cm |
| 35cm | 45cm | 60cm | 52.5cm |
| 40cm | 50cm | 65cm | 57.5cm |
| 60cm | 70cm | 85cm | 77.5cm |
| 80cm | 90cm | 105cm | 97.5cm |
| 125cm | 135cm | 150cm | 102.5cm |
Tip:
Short tips (5cm) are ideal for sleeves, sock, and cuffs.
Standard tips (12.5cm) suit garments, shawls, and longer knitting sessions.Step
3: Cord joints (making cords longer)
Cord joints allow you to join two cords together to create a longer circular needle — perfect for blankets, large shawls, or magic loop.
-
Match the joint size to your system (M1.8, M2, or M4)
-
Screw each cord into the joint firmly
This keeps your system flexible without needing to own every cord length.
Step 4: Cord converters (changing size systems)
Cord converters let you connect different size components safely.
For example:
-
Connecting an M1.8 tip to an M2 cord
-
Adapting an existing cord to new tip sizes
Converters are size-specific and directional, so always check which sizes you are converting from and to.
They are especially useful if your collection has grown over time.
Step 5: Interchangeable stoppers (holding your stitches)
Interchangeable stoppers screw onto the ends of cords in place of needle tips.
They allow you to:
-
Pause a project and remove the tips
-
Try on garments mid-knit
-
Store work securely without stitches slipping
As always, the stopper must match the cord size (M1.8, M2, or M4).
Putting it all together
Once you understand:
-
your needle tip size
-
your matching M system
-
how cord length affects finished needle size
…the Seeknit system becomes calm, modular, and endlessly adaptable.
It’s designed so your tools grow with your knitting — not the other way round.
